Israeli Air Strikes Continue in Gaza Strip
In today's fighting, two Palestinians were killed in a home and two people were injured in Israel.

The Jewish nation is preparing for an intense assault from Hamas a day after killing one of the group's chief political leaders. Heavy security is now in place at most checkpoints in the occupied West Bank and the area has been sealed off by Israel.

Analysts say Israeli leaders may have felt pressed to mount a military operation in Gaza ahead of elections next month. The attacks could boost support for centrist candidates against the right-wing Likud Party's frontrunner Benjamin Netanyahu.

Worldwide criticism is directed at both sides in the conflict. Speaking at the White House after updating the President on the situation, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Hamas has been holding the people of Gaza hostage since what she called an "illegal coup" against Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and blasted the group for using Gaza as a launching pad for rocket attacks against Israeli cities.

Meanwhile, an estimated 3,000 Afghans protested in Kabul today burning effigies, flags and chanting anti-U.S. and Israel slogans. Large protests were also held in Jordan, India, Iran, and Russia.

Hopes of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip have been dashed after seven days of violence that has led to over 400 Palestinian deaths, and left 1,700 more injured.

Israel continued to strike Hamas targets in the area today as militants fired rockets into the Israeli port of Ashkelon in retaliation.

Public displays and rhetoric have two purposes: to assert leadership in the Islamic world and to bolster Tehran's hard-liners at home. But they also may link Iran unfavorably with Hamas' militancy.

Reporting from Beirut -- Students storm the British Embassy residence compound in Tehran, ripping down the Union Jack and hoisting the Palestinian flag, while Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad proposes to try Israeli leaders in absentia.
An Iranian religious organization signs up volunteers for suicide operations in the Gaza Strip, and an Iranian general suggests an Islamic military response to the five-day Israeli offensive against Hamas.
